Sweeping Tort Reform Changes

FICPA NewsFlash [4/7/2006]

Last Friday, the Florida Senate voted 27 to 13 to pass HB 145 by Rep. Don Brown (companion to SB 2006 by Sen. Dan Webster). Just two weeks ago, the Florida House passed this legislation by a vote of 93 to 27. This legislation repeals the doctrine of joint and several liability and provides for meaningful tort reform in Florida. As a member of the Florida Justice Reform Institute (www.fljustice.org), the FICPA fought along with 29 association partners for the repeal of joint and several liability – a battle that has lasted nearly a decade. The bill now goes to the Governor for his signature. This is a huge victory for the business community and CPAs across the state.
