Mark Brechbill is the founder of Mark Brechbill, Certified Public Accountants, a large, local CPA firm serving small to mid-sized businesses in Stuart and on the Treasure Coast. The firm began at about the same time that the CPA industry was moving from a DOS based, to a Windows based operating system. Mark had just left a group of family owned businesses that were using the Apple and Mac operating system, and although he recognized the limitations of that operating system in terms of applications available for business, he embraced the benefits that Windows appeared to have in ease of use and staff training.
Therefore, the firm was started with the desire to develop technological systems and manual systems that would maximize future staff development and growth, and were based on the concept that the most experienced in the firm should find it easiest to adapt to change. This ultimately led to a virtual firm concept, flexible work environment, and a results oriented compensation structure that has come to embrace technology for what it accomplishes to ease people’s lives; making them more productive, successful, and happy. Although by no means a technology expert (that’s why he joined the Biztech section, and remains a “lurker” rather than a regular contributor to the listserv), Mark and the firm remain committed to the changes to our industry that Biztech keeps us up to date on.
Prior to founding the firm in 1994, Mark spent over thirteen years in the banking industry, serving as Chief Operating Officer of a community bank and CFO of a $600 million regional bank. He began his career in public accounting with Arthur Andersen & Co., in Chicago, Illinois, working in the firm’s banking division. He also worked with McGladrey, Hansen, Dunn & Company, (now McGladrey & Pullen), in their Peoria, Illinois office. Mark has a Bachelor of Business degree in accounting from Western Illinois University, is licensed as a CPA in Florida, and is a member of the FICPA and AICPA. Additionally, as with most CPAs, he is active in a number of civic and community programs (primarily as Treasurer).
Mark has been a member of the FICPA since 1983 and of the Business Technology Section since 2007.
